Your Questions, Answered

Buying platinum the smart way starts here.

Platinum is the rarest of the four major investment metals, with annual production roughly one-tenth that of gold. These are the questions our specialists field most often from investors considering a platinum allocation — covering purity, IRA eligibility, the gold-platinum relationship, and our buy-back commitment.

Why add platinum to a precious metals portfolio?

Platinum is rarer than gold — annual mine production is roughly one-tenth as large — and is heavily used in automotive catalytic converters, hydrogen fuel cells, and industrial chemistry. That gives it a dual identity as both a monetary and an industrial metal, with price dynamics that often diverge from gold and silver.

For investors looking beyond a gold-and-silver-only allocation, platinum offers genuine diversification. Call us at 888-506-6439 for a current read on the market.

What does ".9995 fine" mean for platinum?

".9995 fine" means 99.95% pure platinum — the standard fineness for investment-grade platinum bullion globally. Every product on this page meets this standard, whether issued by the U.S. Mint, the Royal Canadian Mint, the Perth Mint, or LBMA-approved refiners.

This is also the IRS-required minimum for platinum held in a Precious Metals IRA.

Is all platinum on this page IRA-eligible?

Yes. Every platinum product Priority Gold offers — Platinum American Eagles (bullion and proof), the Proof 4-Piece Set, Canadian Maple Leafs, Australian Koalas, and LBMA-approved 1 oz platinum bars — meets the IRS .9995 fineness requirement and is produced by an approved mint or refiner.

A Precious Metals IRA can hold any combination of platinum, gold, silver, and palladium in a single self-directed account.

How does the platinum price relate to gold?

Historically, platinum traded at a premium to gold for most of the 20th century, reflecting its scarcity and industrial demand. Since 2015, however, platinum has spent extended periods trading below gold, opening unusual relative-value windows for investors who track the gold-to-platinum ratio.

Whether that gap closes depends on auto-industry demand, hydrogen-economy adoption, and South African mine supply. Our specialists can walk through the current ratio when you call.

Proof vs. BU American Eagle — what's the difference?

BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) Platinum Eagles are the U.S. Mint's standard bullion issue — struck once and sold near the spot price plus a modest premium. They are ideal for investors focused on metal content.

Proof Platinum Eagles are struck multiple times on specially prepared dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted, sculpted designs. Mintages are limited each year, and the reverse motif changes annually. Proofs carry higher premiums but appeal to collectors as well as investors. The 4-Piece Proof Set bundles all four fractional sizes (1/10, 1/4, 1/2, 1 oz) in one issue.

How is my platinum delivered or stored?

Direct purchases ship fully insured via FedEx or USPS Registered Mail with adult-signature delivery. IRA purchases are stored at an IRS-approved depository — typically Delaware Depository, Brink's, or International Depository Services — in your name, with segregated or non-segregated storage based on your preference.

Priority Gold maintains a published buy-back commitment for every platinum product we sell. Review the full buy-back policy for current terms.
