Your Questions, Answered

Buying gold the smart way starts here.

From first-time gold buyers comparing American Eagles and Maple Leafs to retirement savers planning an IRA rollover, these are the questions our specialists field most often — covering purity, premiums, storage, IRS reporting, and our buy-back commitment.

How do I start buying gold from Priority Gold?

Most clients begin with a no-obligation call with one of our precious metals specialists at 888-506-6439. They'll walk you through current pricing, help you choose between modern bullion and pre-1933 U.S. gold, and explain whether direct purchase or a Gold IRA makes more sense for your goals.

Once you've made your selection, orders are confirmed by phone, paid by bank wire or check, and shipped fully insured to your address (or to your IRA depository if you're opening a self-directed account).

What's the difference between bullion coins and pre-1933 U.S. gold coins?

Modern bullion coins — American Eagles, Buffaloes, Maple Leafs, Krugerrands — are produced by government mints and priced very close to the gold spot price plus a small premium. They are IRA-approved and ideal for investors focused on metal content.

Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins — Liberty Quarter, Half, and Double Eagles, plus the Saint-Gaudens series — were struck for circulation before President Roosevelt's 1933 executive order halted gold coinage. Surviving examples are historic, scarce, and graded by professional services (MS-62 through MS-66). They carry numismatic premiums and are not IRA-approved, but offer collectible upside in addition to their gold content.

Which gold coins and bars are IRA-approved?

The IRS requires gold held in a Precious Metals IRA to be at least .995 fine and produced by an approved mint or refiner. American Eagles are explicitly authorized despite their .9167 fineness because they are produced by the U.S. Mint.

On this page, every product showing the gold IRA Eligible badge meets these requirements. That includes American Eagles (bullion and proof), American Buffaloes, Canadian Maple Leafs, Krugerrands, Defender of Liberty, Victoria Cross 2026, Rose Crown Guinea, Mythical Dragon, Four Nation issues, the Eagle proof 4-piece set, and LBMA-approved gold bars from 1 g through 10 oz. Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins are not IRA-eligible.

What does ".9999 fine" mean for gold purity?

".9999 fine" means the coin or bar is 99.99% pure gold — the highest practical purity for investment metal. Canadian Maple Leafs, American Buffaloes, and most LBMA-refined bars are .9999.

Some popular coins use a slightly alloyed composition for durability. American Eagles and Krugerrands are .9167 fine (with copper and silver added), but the coin's stated gold weight is still pure: a 1 oz American Eagle contains one full troy ounce of gold by weight, just in a slightly heavier total coin. Both are equally valid for investment.

How is my gold delivered or stored?

Direct purchases ship fully insured via FedEx or USPS Registered Mail. Packages require an adult signature, and tracking is provided the moment your order leaves our vault.

IRA purchases are stored at an IRS-approved depository on your behalf — typically Delaware Depository, Brink's, or International Depository Services. You retain full ownership; the depository holds the metal in either segregated or non-segregated storage based on your preference. Annual fees vary by depository and storage type.

Are gold purchases reportable to the IRS?

Buying gold from a dealer is not reportable to the IRS regardless of size. Cash payments above $10,000 are reported by the dealer on Form 8300, which is why we settle by bank wire or check.

When you sell back to a dealer, certain quantities of specific coins (such as 25+ Krugerrands or 1 kg+ of gold bars) trigger a 1099-B from the dealer. American Eagles and pre-1933 U.S. coins are not reportable on resale regardless of quantity. We recommend confirming current rules with your tax advisor; this is general information only.

What is the spread or premium over the gold spot price?

Premiums vary by product. Generic LBMA gold bars carry the lowest premium — usually 2–4% over spot. Standard bullion coins (American Eagles, Maple Leafs, Krugerrands) typically run 4–7% over spot. Proof coins, graded pre-1933 U.S. coins, and limited-issue commemoratives carry significantly higher premiums to account for production quality, certification, and scarcity.

Premiums also fluctuate with mint availability and dealer demand. Call us for a live quote on any product on this page.

Can I sell my gold back to Priority Gold?

Yes. Priority Gold maintains a published buy-back commitment for every product we sell. Pricing is based on the current spot price plus a competitive bid premium for the specific coin or bar. You can liquidate any portion of your holdings at any time, whether held directly or inside an IRA.
